Obituary of Kevin Raymond Lynch

Kevin Raymond Lynch, age 70, of Brooklyn, NY, a gentle man and a gentleman, passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on June 2nd, 2024.

Kevin is survived by his loving wife Mary, who was the love of his life. He is also survived by his son Kevin (Nicole), his daughter Kristen (Peter), his brother Brian (Cindy), grandchildren: Liam, Lucas, Aerin, Emilia, and the many cousins, nieces, and nephews who almost universally named him their favorite.

He is preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Mary Kate Lynch.

In 1972 Kevin graduated from Delehanty High School in Jamaica, Queens. Shortly thereafter, while a student at Hunter College, he met the love of his life, Mary, through their mutual friend Eileen Ryan. Mary, intrigued by this “tall drink of water,” agreed to a first date, which consisted of a Catholic mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn. Four years, countless (secular) dates, and hundreds of miles worth of inter-borough trips between Queens and Brooklyn in a gold Chevy Malibu later, they wed in 1978.

He retired from his role as a psychiatric social worker/hospital administrator at Creedmor Psychiatric Center after 40 years of caring and empathetic service to both the patients and his colleagues.  While there, he also absorbed a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of the Belt Parkway between Exits 11N and 25B, including all secret service-road and local street shortcuts, which he would gladly share with anyone who asked (and a few who didn’t).

Kevin enjoyed many, many things. Among them were basketball, golfing, Chicago (the band), Brooklyn (the borough), Roger Maris, bicycle riding, Ken Burns (and almost all other) documentaries, The Quiet Man, The History Channel, learning new recipes, The New York Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Rangers, and every other metropolitan area sports team, and above all, his family. An all-time great listener, he rarely if ever failed to strike up a genuine conversation with anyone who crossed his path, whether it be a parking lot attendant, cashier, or waiter. Untold number of people finished a conversation with him only to turn to one of his children to say, “your dad is great.”

A lifelong resident of the largest, most vibrant city in America, he nonetheless marveled anew each time his children introduced him to exotic new experiences and concepts like edamame, or eating at restaurants other than New Corners in Dyker Heights and Il Vagobondo on the Upper East Side. He was one of the final AT&T customers to transition from a flip phone to a smart phone, ending his holdout only so that he could take pictures of his grandchildren whom he loved so much.

Heartfelt gratitude goes to the incredible, caring nurses, NPs, PAs and MDs at NYU - Langone Surgical Intensive Care Unit, who not only provided the utmost care, concern, attention, and compassion towards Kevin, but his many family members and friends who gathered during his transition from this life to the next.

Friends are invited to visit with the family and Kevin on Friday, June 7th from 2-5 pm and/or 7-9 pm at Marine Park Funeral Home, 3024 Quentin Road, Brooklyn, NY.   All are likewise welcome on Saturday, June 8th at 9:30 am for a funeral mass at Our Lady Help of Christians, 1315 E. 28th Street, Brooklyn, NY.
