Shortly after, his mother passed, and he was cared for by an aunt. After attending Victorino Mapa High School, Herm enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas (Manila) earning his undergraduate and medical degrees. In July 1968, he immigrated to the United States where he completed his residency at St. Clare’s Hospital in Manhattan.
